Springfield Public School District 186 is a K-12 urban district of approximately 15,000 students in central Illinois. The Ball Foundation began its involvement with the district in 1993. During that year, Harvard Park Elementary School became the first participant in the foundation's School Design Collaborative, a shared decision-making model. In 1998, District 186 and the foundation created one of the first Illinois charter schools, Springfield Ball Charter School. In 2000, the foundation, the district, and the Springfield Education Association developed a 5-year partnership agreement intended to increase productivity and literacy in partnership schools and throughout the district.

About the Work: A Snapshot

Continuous School
Improvement
The foundation contracts with Focus on Results to provide coaching and training for instructional leadership teams in partnership schools and the Department of Instruction. The partnership coordinator serves as a coach and facilitator for individual schools, particularly around shared decision-making and instructional leadership.
Communities of Practice Partnership schools have participated in the foundation's Partnership Learning Network. They have attended national meetings and taken learning visits to other partnership sites. The foundation supports the development of a local community of practice that will deepen relationships and learning among the partnerships schools.
