She reminded us of where this journey startedwith the vision and generosity of Carl and Vivian Ball, which began with the aspiration that every child in first grade could read by Christmas. She spoke of the non-linear path of this journey, of the Ball Foundations experiments and learning that led us to this gathering. Joann suggested that our time together was the next iteration of the experiment, an attempt to create a learning community across sites and roles that would lead to new possibilities for the community of practice. Kathy
Crum of Springfield, and a member of the design team, then led us through
the desired outcomes for our journey. She invited all to suggest additional
possibilities, and set the tone for how we could be on this journey together,
as experimenters and colleagues.
